If you have been following my blog, then you have probably already guessed that the high point of our reader’s delight weekend in August of 2023 was the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery and the ride of the Headless Horseman. We would have loved to make this journey in October, you know to really get in the spirit of the story, but we volunteer at a haunted house every October, so we went in August instead. We had scheduled a guided tour of the cemetery, but the directions stated to arrive early as parking was very limited, and as former military I have to be early for everything, or I feel like I am already late, so we got there in plenty of time. We even arrived early enough that we were able to walk leisurely around before the tour started.

The cemetery is very old, although it is still actively being used, with hills, a stream running beside it, and a bridge over it crossing into the wooded area on the other side of the cemetery. The heat and quiet just seemed to press on us with the subtle sound of birds, insects, and the water moving past. It was broad daylight, but it’s just a little eerie at first to see so many headstones clustered together and going up the hills with no context to their individual stories. But then the tour Original Knickerbocker: Washington Irving & “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” tour begins, and the missing context was added to the many graves, monuments, and mausoleums.

Throughout the cemetery there are historical signs outlining the tale of the headless horseman and we got to see burial sites for the Astors, Andrew Carnegie, Washington Irving, the Rockefellers, and even Samuel Gompers. This tour was a historically fascinating adventure, but be sure to bring along your walking shoes, water, and stamina because you are going to need it. And if you still have some energy left after the tour, exit the gate on foot and turn left. There is another little bridge to cross with some more historical markers, and in the medium to your right you will see a sculpture of the flight of the headless horseman.

Like the location, Steele by Margo Bond Collins, is a special book that is a Kobo original and unable to be found on other platforms. I know! A bit of a bummer, but I enjoy this author, so I did purchase it from Kobo. It’s a story of love, betrayal, and mystery where the leading lady runs right into danger to find her HEA. That is if pack expectations don’t get in the way. I really enjoyed this first book in the moonstone pack series. The story was fast-paced and kept me engaged throughout with well-developed characters, plat, and world. I almost didn’t purchase the book because it wasn’t on Amazon, but I was so glad that I did. It hasn’t made me switch retailors, but it did find me purchasing the rest of the series from Kobo.

There are some stories and some adventures that just stay in your mind long after they are over. This is one of those times. Going to the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery was a once in a lifetime experience that I would love to get to enjoy again. If you have ever been, let me know what you thought of the journey.

Happy reading

Mila Wright spent the last year planning her dream wedding in Yellowstone National Park. But that dream becomes a nightmare when those plans fall apart in the worst way possible. Distraught, she runs, not considering the dangers that might await her if she strays from the marked roadways in the park.

When Steele Jacobs goes out for a run in his wolf form and hears a human woman crying, he knows the last thing he should do is get involved. But something about the sound draws him to her—and when he sees Mila Wright, he knows without a doubt that she is his fated mate.

But he’s expected to choose a mate who will strengthen the Moonstone Pack, not a human weakling who brings nothing to the match. Can Mila even accept his werewolf nature? And if they bond together, can the two of them protect the pack against its new enemies?

Official published review

Everything changed

The author hit us hard with the drama at the very beginning of this book, but instead of evening out with some gentle progression, the intensity changed. And what an amazing change it was for the characters. They found betrayal, danger, and a connection that had them questioning their own sanity. You know all the best elements in a romance story. There were even a few pennies that just kept showing up. But through it all the author created a well-developed world with room for growth and a new beginning that sets the tone for all the books that will come afterwards. This book was a fantastic introduction to this world, and I can’t wait to see what happens next!

USA Today, Wall Street Journal, and New York Times bestselling author Margo Bond Collins is a former college English professor who, tired of explaining the difference between "hanged" and "hung," turned to writing romance novels instead.
